Chapter 3

“What are you doing at my desk?”

The kid looked up at her with nervous eyes. He stumbled to respond, but couldn’t get the words out in the right order.

“That’s not your desk anymore.”

Carrie spun around confused. It was Tara, her best friend at the office. The tall woman had mischief in her eyes.

“I’m really not in the mood for one of your pranks.”

Tara tapped the nameplate on the desk, and Carrie saw that it didn't hold her name. She furrowed her brows.

“It’s not your desk.” Tara said, a smile on her face “because that is your desk.”

She pointed at the corner of the massive floor and Carrie squinted at the door. Someone in maintenance was stenciling on a new name: hers.

“I can’t believe this.” She said, stepping into the comparatively huge office. It had a bright window overlooking the bay, and her desk was long and modern – a big change from the standard desk in her old cubicle.

“Don’t sound too excited about it.”

“It’s because I’m not.”

“What?” Tara nearly shouted. “You’ve been talking about an office like this since you started – and suddenly you’re over it? Half the people in this place would kill for an office like this, me included.”

Carrie gave her a half smile and collapsed into her new chair. It was squishy.

“Not like this.”

She tried to call Calvin, and his phone didn’t even go to voicemail. She stared at it, the heavy feeling in her heart not getting any lighter.

“What happened?”

She explained at the lounge down the street, after the bartender poured two healthy glasses of red wine.

“I slept with him.”

“What? With who?”

“Calvin.”

Tara’s mouth dropped “No way. Carrie. You didn’t.”

Carrie nodded, taking a sip of wine. “Yup. And I didn’t know what was in the file. I just thought it was a signature, I never would have –“

“Would have what? Not made the biggest deal of your career? It’s his job to read it, not yours.”

“He trusted me. He asked if it was fair, and I told him it was. And then I slept with him. I even felt something for him, and now it’s all ruined.”

“He played the game better than anyone, he knows that all is fair in-“

“He’s not like that. I think I really hurt him.”

There was a long pause as the pair considered the lipstick stains on their wineglasses.

“So how was it?”

She hesitated, then smiled “Amazing.

They finished their wine, paid the bartender then made their way outside. The sun was down, and the never ending bustle of the city was starting to reach its crescendo. Yellow cabs flew by, honking. Tourists took pictures, and groups of men in women in evening wear laughed their way down the sidewalks, eying their own reflections in the windows of luxury boutiques.

“You want to share a cab?”

“No, I have one more stop to make.”

She waited for Tara to leave, flagged down a cab and handed him Vanderbilt’s city address. The ride only took a few minutes, and the city lights and drink made it pass far too quickly.
